KCG Monthly Newsletter: April 2022

Bringing you the latest news on the KCG Food Co-op. We cover monthly news related to local food, community and culture.

Greetings to you, our Member-Owners and cooperators in building our future store.  Since we last spoke, we have seated a new Board of Directors for our nine-member Board.  Please check out your Board members and profiles on our website. Our board meets on the second Monday of each month and is open to the general public. You can find full details below in the events section if you’re interested in attending our next meeting on April 11th.

Our greatest challenge this year is adding more member-owners.  Our goal for 2022 is 300 member-owners and we currently are at 217.  Let’s surpass the goal of 300 by going much farther.  We have over a 1,000 people on our email list who receive information from KCG.  What is stopping them from becoming new members?  We are certain that many of you may have answers to this question and we want to hear from you.  Please reach out to us by replying to this e-mail or simply come to our events and talk with one of us. We welcome feedback!

In honor of Earth Day on April 22nd, we wanted to address the crucial matter of soil health. Many of us do not appreciate the gift of soil but if we are concerned with our health and the health of the planet, it is critical to begin a journey of self-education regarding the importance of good soil.  What your fruits and vegetables are grown in and what our meat-producing animals eat is integral to the type of nutrients that we are consuming. Regenerative agricultural practices help maintain the health of our local soil while increasing the nutritional profile of our local produce. Good soil is also a major factor in preventing extreme flooding as it absorbs water at a faster rate than dirt. What’s more, the management of soil is very important to the issue of taking carbon emissions out of the atmosphere and impeding the amount of phosphorous in our waterways.

There is so much to learn about soil and Kennett Community Grocer is committed to being your teacher through future educational sessions in partnership with the Kennett Library.  In the meantime, please check out the Pennsylvania Association of Sustainable Agriculture website at www.PASAfarming.org.  There you will find many resources on soil management, farming practices and learn so much about the farms who will one day supply our store.  Can’t wait to buy their products! But we cannot do that until you JOIN US!

PLEASE BECOME A MEMBER-OWNER TODAY! Already a member-owner? Please follow us on Instagram and Facebook, post, tag your friends, help us get the word out!

4/5: MOVE Meeting (7pm-8pm)
This is our monthly meeting for volunteers to discuss upcoming events and ways in which you can plug into the organization. If you’re interested in volunteering your time and/or expertise, we would love for you to join via Zoom.
4/9: Lunch with Edie (11am-1pm)
We will be at Mary Pat’s in the Market at Liberty Place the second Saturday of every month from 11 AM to 1 PM.  Our next event is April 9th. Please come out, grab lunch or a beverage and sit down for a chat with us.  You all hold the keys to our new door.  You can help us open by sharing your ideas.
4/11: Public Board Meeting (7pm-8pm)
We meet as a Board on the second Monday evening of the month by Zoom at 7PM, every month except July and December.  These meetings are open to the general public and we welcome you to attend our meetings and find out what we are doing to move the co-op forward. Here is the Zoom link to join.
4/30: Healthy Kids Day (Save the Date!)
We will be doing an event at the YMCA Healthy Kids Day on April 30th.  Our event is with “Clarence Carrot”, and we aim to introduce children (and adults) to the joys of eating veggies. We will have a Scavenger Hunt for kids and fun things to do at our table.  We will be announcing the location of the table and more information on this event soon.
