KCG Monthly Newsletter: December 2022

Bringing you monthly news of the Kennett Community Grocer, a growing Food Co-op committed to local food, community, and culture.

Hello to our Member-Owners and Friends!
HELP US REACH OUR MEMBERSHIP GOAL FOR 2022
We currently have 275 Member-Owners and hope to achieve a count of 300 by January.  If each of us recruits 1 new member in 2023, we will achieve our Growth Plan of 500 Member-Owners by December 2023.  Please be an ambassador for this local initiative and speak with your neighbors and friends.  Check out our website (www.kennettcommunitygrocer.coop)  for talking points on the benefit of KCG providing organic, natural, local and healthy food alternatives for your table!

LIVE BETTER EVENTS AND KCG CO-OP BOXES
This past month we were at the Kennett Library hosting an information table with our LIVE BETTER partners, Kennett Library and Chester County Hospital.  The event on November 14 from 3 to 5 PM offered glucose finger-stick testing by LCH staff, information on healthy eating and information for living with diabetes. We look forward to continuing this partnership with future monthly events.

The KCG Co-op Box sales continue.  We sold 34 boxes in November and look forward to our December sales.  Pick-up will be at Kennett Friends Meeting, 125 W. Sickle Street, on December 17 from 10 AM to 12 noon. Order your box online at www.kennettcommunitygrocer.coop/box by December 11th at noon.

SPECIAL FEATURE: RECAP OF OUR ANNUAL MEETING

Kennett Community Grocer (KCG) Member-Owners gathered at Galer Estate Vineyard and Winery for the 2022 Annual Meeting and Happy Hour on November 3. The evening’s unseasonable warmth made it an especially lovely night to mingle with fellow founding members, both long-term and brand new.

2022 has seen much positive movement toward the goal of making our grocery store a reality, and there was a celebratory vibe in the air. Board President, Edie Burkey helped capture that feeling by introducing a cheerleading theme to the business portion of the evening. Edie reported on the following topics, all of which have been or will be covered in greater length in other issues of the “Mushroom Messenger”:

  • the importance of a newly expanded Board and development of a Business Advisory Committee
  • the November Market Study by a nationally recognized co-op expert that will help determine a suitable location for the store
  • the recently completed Market Survey that will shape store development in response to what members want
  • KCG’s expanding community outreach, in particular the LIVE BETTER partnership with Kennett Library and Chester County Hospital
  • the continuation of the popular Co-op boxes

There were two overriding messages:
1.    KCG board and members have been making the right moves, and
2.    it’s an important time for Member-Owners to rally around—to answer the call to help build membership and to volunteer, especially in the areas of grant writing, capital campaigns, and communications.

Thanks for the success of this remarkably jovial annual meeting are due to Olivia from Galer Estate Winery for the wine and great atmosphere, the delightful event planner Amanda Glatfelter from Generative Studio who made everything run smoothly, Beth Tumas from T&M Catering for delicious food, Cheerleader-in-Chief Edie Burkey, the KCG Board, and Board’s hardworking committees. To all the Member-Owners, thank you for your commitment and your energy, which move KCG forward.
