KCG Monthly Newsletter: December 2023

Bringing you monthly news of the Kennett Community Grocer, a growing Food Co-op committed to local food, community, and culture.

Hello to our Member-Owners and Friends!
In this edition:
  • Board Election Results
  • December's Co-op Box is the last one
  • Looking ahead to January and beyond
  • Delicious uses for Watermelon Radishes and Apple Butter

We are currently at a Member-Owner count of 338, falling short of our hoped-for number of 500 by the end of 2023. As we are a determined bunch of members, please heed our rallying cry to get out there in the community and talk to friends and neighbors about joining. Though we do not expect the member-equity money to provide the sole financing of the store, it is imperative that we demonstrate our community interest to attract grants and bank financing. Shared community interest and demand for the mission is crucial.
Consider a gift of membership this holiday season!

Member-Owner Refer-a-Friend Promotion - December is the last chance. Any Member-Owner who refers a friend who then joins receives a free Co-op Box! Let us know who you have referred. That person will provide your name on the membership form, and we’ll get you the box!

The results of the Annual Board Election are in: you have elected to return Edie Burkey to the Board and selected Philippe Mazur, Norah Roth-Moore and Victoria Wiedwald to become Board Directors for the next three years. We extend them a warm welcome.

The new Board will have a Retreat in January to ramp up our plans to move this store forward. Our Consultants, Laurel Blair and Carol Ritter, will lead the retreat. Laurel and Carol come to us from Caroltalks, a marketing and business development company from Bethlehem, PA. Both were instrumental in developing the Bethlehem Food Co-op which is opening in late January 2024. We hope to learn from their experiences and bring our Cooperative much closer to opening.

December’s KCG Co-op Box Distribution will be on Saturday, December 16 from 10 AM to Noon at the Kennett Friend’s Meeting House, 125 W. Sickle Street in Kennett Square. Please buy a box and stop by. Please place orders by Sunday, December 10. The box is early this month to avoid Christmas rush.
This month's box - order below:

January Happy Hour Social will be on Thursday, January 11 from 5 to 7 PM at Victory Brewing. If you are a new Member-Owner, please come by to meet fellow KCG members, have a free beer, and enjoy the company. We look forward to as many people as possible coming. Please consider bringing a friend who is interested in joining us. Together we can create the momentum for expanding our membership.
Pre-Order Your Co-op Box
Well done, Co-op Box Team and Volunteers!

The Membership of Kennett Community Grocer extends a heartfelt thank you to the team of people who organized and delivered on the KCG Produce Boxes for the past 18 months. The team included Tracy Bhalla, Ashton Bhalla, Philippe Mazur, Sandi Murphy, Nancy Lappenbusch, Rachel Warren, Mitch Warren, and Edie Burkey. Our Communications team members, including Kimm Eagle, Adam Peterson, Anne Vial, and Olivia Finizio, contributed a great deal of energy to advertising the box and pick-up events. Other volunteers contributed their time and help as well. And of course, we could not have done this without the great produce and service provided by Flying Plow Farm from Cecil County, Maryland.

The KCG Board of Directors made the difficult decision to end this produce box effort due to the many demands that will be placed on all the above volunteers as we move into the next phase of expanding the Membership numbers and doing fundraising to have sufficient resources to open the grocery store.

Flying Plow will continue to offer monthly produce through their website, They offer CSA’s and individual purchase choices for home delivery or pick up at selected sites. Please check this out and support them.

We, along with many of our vendors, will be moving on to a new Member-Benefit program to be detailed in emails to come and in the January Newsletter.

Just a thought: Is your Apple Butter getting tired of toast? Try using it on a crusty sandwich with ham, cheddar, some thin apple slices, and arugula.
