KCG Monthly Newsletter: May 2022

Bringing you the latest news on the KCG Food Co-op. We cover monthly news related to local food, community, and culture.

Hello to our Member-Owners and Friends!  Spring is fully blooming and planting season is upon us. We’re starting to get out more and Kennett Community Grocer is in full swing. Here’s a quick update about what we’ve been up to and what you can expect this May.
WHAT WE'VE BEEN UP TO
April has been a busy month of planning for the Kennett Community Grocer. We held our monthly board meeting on April 11th and spent a great deal of time planning our Spring Member-Owner campaign as well as several other events.

Our most notable event was Healthy Kids Day. On April 30, Kennett Community Grocer hosted an event for children at the YMCA Healthy Kids Day.  This event featured Clarence Carrot who encouraged all the children to happily eat their veggies.  We gave away cool Kennett Community Grocer Tote bags, frisbees and lots of little Clarence Carrot toys.  We look forward to a repeat visit by Clarence Carrot in the future!  When our doors open, educational events like this will take place as often as possible.

GROW WITH US THIS SPRING
Our Spring Member-Owner campaign is now underway through May 7th. We are pushing to have 20 new member-owners join and to sweeten the deal we will be offering a CSA share to one lucky winner. If you join during this week or are a member-owner who refers a friend to join, you will be entered in a lottery to win a half-share CSA from Flying Plow Farm ($325 value). As a member-owner, this is a great way to be an Ambassador for growth of the co-op, so please get out there and contact all of your friends and encourage them to join! Let us know so you are entered in the lottery.

As part of our campaign we will also be hosting and participating in several events this month. Look below in the “Upcoming Events” sections to see if you can join us for any of these events. We’d love to see you there!

MEMBERSHIP EVER GROWING
We are now at 225 Member-Owners.  This places us about one-third of the way to site selection and getting underway to finance the store. It is important that we build the Membership this year and if you have some ideas on how to honor the first 500 Member-Owners, please send your ideas our way.  Other Co-ops, for example, have created a wall in the store with the names of the “Founding Five-hundred”.  We would love to honor you all with a cool wall of names if you want.  Please join and let us know what we should do to honor you. You can always respond directly to this email with your ideas.

KENNETT BOOKHOUSE IS YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD BOOKSTORE

We plan to highlight Kennett Area businesses who support our mission.  This month we feature, Stefanie and John Lynn who opened Kennett Bookhouse in April 2019 with the mission to become your neighborhood bookstore.  They are one of our Member-Owners and share in our mission to make KCG your favorite neighborhood grocery store.

At Kennett Bookhouse, this wonderful couple will help you find a great book every time you visit the store.  Most recently, I went there on a mission to continue my education in sustainable agriculture and Stefanie suggested “Pastoral Song” by James Rebanks.  This is a terrific read and International Bestseller and just a beautiful book.  You will want to buy it for yourself and your friends.  James Rebanks shares with the reader a personal journey on his family farm from believing in factory farming to then becoming disillusioned by the terrible effects this had on the land.  He eventually returned to ethical, sustainable farming to save his land and his family. It is an impassioned and urgent story and informs us about why we should have a co-op that supports our local farmers who like James are protecting the land, animals and ultimately our health. Please support Kennett Bookhouse, our co-op and our farmers today.
