KCG Monthly Newsletter: November 2024

Bringing you the monthly news of Kennett Community Grocer, a growing Food Co-op committed to local food, community, and culture.

Hello to our Member-Owners and Friends!

In this edition:
WHAT’S THE BOARD BEEN UP TO?

At the October KCG Board meeting, we discussed what occurred at the October 9 Kennett Borough Council meeting when the Council voted not to accept the lease terms we offered. As noted in the Special Feature below, this outcome is disappointing to all of us. Our Board and our Membership now needs to turn our attention to “what comes next.”

To that end, Member-Owners will soon receive an invitation for KCG’s Annual Meeting, which will be held virtually this year on December 9th from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. Members are encouraged to attend and contribute ideas on our next steps. We have also shared a link with Members to a survey where you can submit questions and comments in advance so that we can be sure to address them during the webcast.

Speaking of next steps, a very important part of our next year will be building our volunteer base in a number of areas. The Board is calling on YOU to donate time as a volunteer – in whichever ways and for however much time you are able. Please fill out the Volunteer form on the website, and our Volunteer Coordinator Sandi Murphy will contact you to discuss areas of need and match your time and interest.

The next KCG Board meeting will be Monday, November 11th in-person at the Kennett Township Community Room, 801 Burrows Run Rd, Chadds Ford, 19317. All Member-Owners are welcome to attend. We will be discussing the possibility of applying for 501(c)(3) non-profit status for our “Food for All” co-op program.

KCG was delighted to join-in at the Po-Mar-Lin Fall Festival!

SPECIAL FEATURE: Update, Thank You, and What’s Next

Along with our loyal and growing membership, the KCG Board is coming to terms with the latest development in our search for a store location: the decision not to pursue a lease at 600 S. Broad Street in Kennett Square. We remain fully committed to bringing a community-owned grocery store to Kennett Square, one that will thrive for the long term, and are already working on our next steps. Here is a recap of where we are.

Update: On October 17th, we notified Member-Owners of the decision not to pursue a lease of this Borough property. As we said then, after four months of thorough negotiations and financial analysis, the KCG Board of Directors and the Kennett Square Borough Council made the mutual, tough decision to end the lease discussions. Much like in a home-buying process, even after an offer is accepted, deeper due diligence can reveal challenges or costs that make it unfeasible to move forward. This was the case here. While we were initially excited about the promise of this location, ultimately the financial risks and renovation costs associated with the lease were too significant for the co-op to responsibly take on.

Thank you: We are grateful for the support of the Membership and the hard work of Board members to develop the plans and then study the details to make the best decision for the organization moving forward. Thank you for your continued trust and enthusiasm as we work together to bring a community-owned grocery store to the Kennett Square area.

What’s Next: Member-Ownerss are invited you to join us for our Annual Meeting on December 9th (held virtually), where we will discuss lessons learned from the lease negotiations and share the Board’s plan for the future of KCG. A formal invitation will be sent soon, but in the meantime, please submit any questions or comments using this link so we can address them during the meeting. We move into the coming year stronger than ever and, with your help and support, will make our grocery store dreams a reality.
