KCG Monthly Newsletter: August 2025

Bringing you the monthly news of Kennett Community Grocer, a growing Food Co-op committed to local food, community, and culture.

Hello to our Member-Owners and Friends!

In this edition:

What's the Board Been Up To?

The KCG Board is hard at work on behalf of our Member-Owners and the broader community. At our July meeting, we made several important leadership transitions and continued advancing plans to bring our community-owned grocery store to life.

We’re pleased to announce the new Executive Committee of the KCG Board:

Angela Wagner – President
Stu Mundth – Vice President
Mitch Warren – Treasurer
Caitlin Treacy Buttery – Secretary

We also welcomed Greg Gurev to the Board to fill a recent vacancy. Greg brings deep business and leadership experience, and previously ran in our most recent election—we’re excited to have him on board.

Another major milestone: the appointment of the Board for our soon-to-be-official 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which will support KCG’s capital fundraising efforts. We're not sharing the name just yet, but this new nonprofit will make it possible for us to accept tax-deductible donations to help fund our future store.

The new nonprofit Board will be:

Edie Burkey – President
Sandi Murphy – Vice President & Secretary
Lynn Nathan – Treasurer

Edie and Sandi stepped down from the KCG Board to take on these new roles, and we are grateful for their continued dedication to the co-op’s mission. In particular, the Board would like to extend our deepest thanks to Edie Burkey for her passion, perseverance, and commitment as President of Kennett Community Grocer over the past four+ years. Edie’s energy and belief in the co-op’s mission has kept the momentum going, and while we’ll miss her voice on the KCG Board, we’re thrilled she’ll continue leading the chanrge as President of our newly formed nonprofit. Her dedication continues to shape the store we're building—and the community behind it.

We’re incredibly thankful to everyone who has stepped up to the plate to lead—whether on the Board, our nonprofit, or as part of our volunteer teams. Your leadership, time, and heart are what keep this movement going.

THANK YOU!!!

Meanwhile, all of KCG’s rockstar volunteer teams—Communications, Events, Membership, and Store & Property—are actively working on the goals shared by Member-Owners at our Annual Meeting. From event planning to scouting store locations, there’s a lot of energy behind the scenes!

As always, all Member-Owners are welcome at our monthly public Board meetings. Join us at the next one on Sunday, August 18 at 7:00 PM at the Kennett Senior Center.

Membership Ever-growing

Our Member-Owner count has reached 476. Let’s grow to 500 before the end of December 2025! The best way for membership growth is for existing members to talk with friends and neighbors. We will soon be planning the wall plaque for the store honoring the first 500 community members who stepped forward to help open the store through their member equity shares. Please add your name to this plaque, join now and don’t lose the opportunity to be honored.

BECOME A MEMBER-OWNER TODAY

To help us inspire others to join the movement for fresh, local food, we're asking YOU—our Member-Owners—to share your story of what brought you to Kennett Community Grocer and what you’re most excited about. ➡️ Please answer a short prompt (or 2) to help us continue to grow! Every new member strengthens our case for funding and helps bring us closer to opening the doors of our future store.

SHARE YOUR "WHY"

Our Communications Team is seeking a volunteer to help write this monthly newsletter and crafting engaging social media posts about our big news to come. This team plays a vital role in spreading the word out about KCG and keeping our Member-Owners informed. If you're able to help, please fill out our volunteer interest form, and our friendly Volunteer Coordinator, Sandi Murphy, will be in touch. We’d love to have you join us!

SPECIAL FEATURE:

ADVANCING OUR MISSION TO SUPPORT LOCAL FARMERS & PRODUCERS

In keeping with the vision shared by Member-Owners at our Annual Meeting, KCG is actively exploring a storefront model centered on consignment sales from local farmers and producers. This approach aligns with our mission to prioritize fresh, local food while creating fair, sustainable opportunities for those who grow and make it.

Since our last newsletter, we’ve begun preparing for lease negotiations and held a productive conversation with a small group of farmers, which confirmed strong interest in this model. We’re now preparing to host a larger information session with farmers in September to further explore what’s possible together.

We’re also learning from successful models. Sandi Murphy, now Vice President and Secretary of Friends of our supporting nonprofit, traveled to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to visit all four locations of Argus Farm Stop, a thriving consignment-based store. She returned energized—with photos, insights, and inspiration for how we can shape a similar store right here in our region.

For the sake of our local farming economy, it is critical we come together as a community to sustain the benefits of local produce, meat, dairy and prepared goods from our producers. With present changes and challenges at the United States Department of Agriculture, small family farms are being squeezed in many ways. Small production family farming has always been a risky business and access to retail markets a challenge. We are proud as a membership-driven food cooperative organization to be able to come together and provide opportunities for our farming community as well as provide healthy and delicious food.
