KCG Quarterly Newsletter: April 2021

We’re overjoyed to share with you the Kennett Community Grocer Quarterly Newsletter! Keep an eye out in your inbox for this bushel of features and information in April, July, October, and January. We’ll be featuring some favorite farms, locals, volunteers, Member-Owners, and share exciting news about KCG.

FARM SPOTLIGHT
We excited to highlight Aristos’ Harvest, located in Lincoln University, PA. This is a beautiful farm where goats abound, chickens cluck all around, and a pig who goes by the name, Olivia, meanders by to meet you while bees go buzzing back to their hives.

Anyone who farms knows this to be true: It is not a farm. It is a lifestyle. And we are beaming with gratitude that Beth and Tony have chosen this lifestyle and decided to join us as Member-Owners of the KCG. Deriving its name from the Greek word meaning most excellent or valuable, this busy farm produces goats, goat milk products, chicken meat, honey, and honey products. We’re looking forward to the day when these products will be for sale on our shelves!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
You can find Matt Stauffer, an outstanding Member-Owner volunteer, greeting shoppers at the Kennett Square Farmers Market at our KCG Information Table. With a dry sense of humor and a terrific approach, he shares the perks of joining a food cooperative to prospective Member-Owners:

You know, like being a part of a democratic system whereas a Member-Owner you have voting rights on decisions, an opportunity to be on the board of directors, special owner discounts at the store, access to Member-Owner-only events/workshops… just to name a few.

Matt comes from Landenberg, PA, and has been a Member-Owner from the beginning and is currently a member of the MOVE (Marketing, Outreach, Volunteer and Education) Committee. It is because of Member-Owners like Matt that we will succeed in opening the doors to KCG! Matt asks you to join him in this volunteer effort to recruit more Member-Owners and educate our community on what is in store for them if they join.

Drop us an email at info@kennettcommunitygrocer.coop to volunteer! For an investment of one hour per month, you can help us open the doors to KCG!

KCG BOOK CLUB NEWS
On April 15, the KCG Book Club discussed The Jungle Effect by Daphne Miller, MD. In an introduction to the book by the renowned Wellness leader, Andrew Weil, MD, we learned that this is indeed not a book about a “diet” but a guide in what foods to purchase and eat that maintain optimal health. Looking at foods worldwide, Dr. Miller researched the nutritional elements of foods consumed by people who have a decreased incidence of chronic disease.

The next book the KCG Book Club will read is the Grocery Story by Jon Steinman, who writes about the “Promise of food co-ops in the Age of Grocery Giants.” Join us and Jon for this informative discussion! Jon will join us via Zoom from his home in British Columbia, Canada. The discussion will be held on July 15 (third Thursday of the month at 7 PM) and you can pick up your copy at the Kennett Library in late May.

WHAT’S POSSIBLE FOR YOU, KCG MEMBER-OWNER:
Refer friends and neighbors to become Member-Owners between May 7th - May 14th and be entered to win a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) from Flying Plow Farm or Brewer's Hideaway Farm! This means you have a chance to receive fresh, locally grown produce from a farm on a weekly basis during the growing season. Each referral counts as one entry and every new member-owner gets entered as well.

Visit the KCG Free Seed Library on Union Street in the borough!

Watch our Facebook and Instagram pages and keep an eye out in your inbox for our May Member-Owner Campaign.

Please continue to show us some co-op love and support! Give us a like, a share, and keep talking about KCG! We are 155 Member-Owners strong and growing every month. Every Member-Owner gets us closer to opening the doors to KCG.
