Co-op News

We ended our fiscal year with 64 member-owners!!! And we have had a successful first board election with 7 elected members on our board. We are excited to hit the ground running and have already filled the vacant positions on our board.
Our new official board is:
President - Britton Mendenhall
Vice President - Maureen O'Shea
Treasurer - Roberta Cosentino
Secretary - Diane Bove
Members at Large - Chris Allison, Josh Fitzgerald and Meggie Shaeffer

Our next step is a big push to reach 100 member owners! When we reach this benchmark we will start our formal market study which will give us guidance on square footage and possible locations for our future store. So if each of you, our member-owners, helps 2 neighbors, friends, or co-workers to join our ranks this month, we will be well on our way to opening our doors. If you are on the fence about becoming a member-owner, now is the time to invest so that we secure this opportunity for our own local grocer for our community.

Member Owner Spotlight

Tara Smith

I grew up on a small farm in Vermont and everywhere I’ve lived since—Boston, Ireland, Kennett Square—a connection to the earth and the food it produces has been central. Here in Kennett Square, that’s included belonging to a CSA and sourcing as much as I can at the Farmers Market. My parents were members of a food co-op in Vermont and I have happy memories of being in “our” store, where we knew people and knew everything was natural, fresh, and safe—and good—to eat.

I think being a member-owner of the Kennett Square Food Co-op is about walking the walk, being proactive in supporting local growers and producers and strengthening our local economy and community.

I’m not sure how we got so far away from the roots of our food sources, being willing to sacrifice our health and the health of our planet for the sake of choice, convenience, and short-sighted savings. The Co-op gives us all a chance to build something joyful together that will leave a legacy for future generations. But it won’t happen unless you join us!

    President's Report

Looking back at the past year, I am so amazed and proud to see how much work we’ve accomplished together and how far we have come in the process. Beginning this new fiscal year with our newly elected Board, including two new additions, I am confident of the huge strides we will make towards getting the doors open to our community grocer.

Meeting Member-Owner milestones will be a big focus this year, as well as a formal market study and the possibility of a site search. I am excited to share this journey with you over the next couple months and encourage you to join in this cooperative effort.
